Nghiên cứu với tiêu đề “Phytochemical composition and antioxidant potential of Quercus myrsinaefolia Blume leaf fractions: a combined HPLC and GC–MS approach” đã được công bố trên tạp chí Preparative Biochemistry & Biotechnology thuộc Taylor & Francis.

New research published in Preparative Biochemistry & Biotechnology
A new research article published in September 2026 provides further scientific insight into the potential of plant-derived compounds as natural antioxidants.
The study, titled “Phytochemical composition and antioxidant potential of Quercus myrsinaefolia Blume leaf fractions: a combined HPLC and GC–MS approach,” has been published in Preparative Biochemistry & Biotechnology, a Taylor & Francis journal.
The research investigates the phytochemical composition and antioxidant potential of different fractions obtained from Quercus myrsinaefolia Blume leaves, highlighting the potential of this native tree as a source of biologically active natural compounds.
The study involved researchers from several universities and research institutions, with Dr. Pham Thi Thu Ha from the Faculty of Applied Sciences, Ton Duc Thang University, Vietnam, serving as the corresponding author.
Combining HPLC and GC–MS for comprehensive phytochemical profiling
The study applied an integrated analytical approach to characterize the chemical composition of the plant fractions.
The Quercus myrsinaefolia Blume leaves were extracted using 80% ethanol, followed by fractionation to obtain different fractions, including:
- n-Hexane fraction.
- Ethyl acetate fraction.
- Aqueous fraction.
The resulting fractions were subsequently investigated using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS).
HPLC profiling identified several important phenolic compounds, including chlorogenic acid, p-hydroxybenzoic acid, myricetin and kaempferol. GC–MS analysis further revealed a diverse range of metabolites, including phenolic compounds, fatty acid derivatives and terpenoids.
Ethyl acetate fraction shows the strongest antioxidant activity
One of the key findings of the study is that the ethyl acetate fraction demonstrated the strongest antioxidant activity among the investigated fractions.
This fraction was also characterized by a relatively high abundance of phenolic and flavonoid compounds, supporting the potential contribution of these phytochemicals to antioxidant activity.
The antioxidant properties were evaluated using several assays, including:
- DPPH radical-scavenging activity.
- ABTS radical-scavenging activity.
- Reducing power.
By integrating antioxidant assays with phytochemical profiling, the research provides a broader view of the relationship between plant chemical composition and biological activity.
Correlation analysis strengthens the findings
In addition to HPLC and GC–MS profiling, the researchers performed correlation analyses to examine relationships between phytochemical contents and antioxidant indicators.
The findings indicate that antioxidant activity was primarily associated with phenolic composition, rather than simply being determined by extraction yield.
This observation may be important for future research and process optimization. Maximizing the amount of extract obtained is not necessarily sufficient; the chemical quality and composition of individual fractions may be more relevant when developing plant-derived antioxidant ingredients.
Potential applications in functional foods, nutraceuticals and pharmaceuticals
The findings provide a scientific basis for further investigation of Quercus myrsinaefolia Blume as a potential source of natural antioxidant compounds.
Several potential application areas may be explored through future research.
Functional foods
Phenolic and flavonoid compounds with antioxidant properties could be investigated further as natural bioactive ingredients for functional food development.
Nutraceuticals
The combination of phytochemical diversity and antioxidant activity may support further studies into the potential use of selected fractions or isolated compounds in nutraceutical applications.
Pharmaceutical research
The identification of bioactive plant compounds may also provide a starting point for additional research into plant-derived bioactive substances and potential pharmaceutical applications.
Further studies will nevertheless be required to assess mechanisms of action, safety, stability, standardization and efficacy before any specific health or pharmaceutical applications can be established.
Supporting sustainable use of plant resources
Beyond its biochemical significance, the study also highlights the potential value of investigating native plant resources as sources of bioactive compounds.
Characterizing valuable phytochemicals and their biological activities can contribute to a better understanding of plant resources and may support approaches that add scientific and economic value while encouraging more sustainable utilization of native biodiversity.
The research represents a collaboration among several institutions, including Vietnam National University of Forestry, Ton Duc Thang University, Thai Nguyen University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Hiroshima University, Quy Nhon University, The University of Queensland and VinUniversity.
